Mena – living her best life in Canada after being adopted as a stray in Bantayan

Interested in gaining some meaningful volunteer work experience with stray dogs and cats in the Philippines?

The Island Sanctuary Santa Fe Bantayan Island has over 50 dogs and cats in their care and need all types of volunteers from one day to one year to help out with all types of tasks. This sanctuary is a small grassroots organization started by two passionate individuals committed to the welfare of animals. Only steps away from the beautiful beaches of Bantayan, this peaceful sanctuary provides a haven for the unwanted dogs and cats on the island.

Without the sanctuary, the dogs of Bantayan face abuse, neglect, and ultimately capture by the dog catcher who locks them in cages in the blazing sun without food or water, awaiting their euthanasia date. The publicly funded “pound” does not run an adoption program and simply exists for population control. The Sanctuary exists to give these animals a second chance.

*UPDATE* On November 7, 2018, representatives from the Island Rescue Organization were able to negotiate the release of 48 dogs from death row at the “pound” in Bantayan into the care of the Sanctuary. This has more than doubled the number of animals in their care and they need volunteers more than ever to care for these animals. Additionally, the dog catcher has agreed to stop catching and euthanizing dogs on Bantayan. This is a significant step for the safety of these animals!
